If you’re expecting a baby and searching for a newborn photographer in Kempsey, the Macleay Valley, or the Mid North Coast, you’re probably feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. Totally normal. Newborn photos are one of those once-in-a-lifetime things, and it’s hard to know what the experience will actually be like until you’re in it.

Want to know what to expect at a newborn photography session in my studio, so you can arrive feeling calm, prepared, and confident? This is only the first baby step to becoming completely prepared!

Quick overview: how a newborn session works

A newborn session is slow, gentle, and baby-led. That means we allow plenty of time for:

  • Feeding
  • Settling
  • Nappy changes
  • Cuddles
  • Breaks whenever baby needs them

The goal isn’t to “push through” quickly. The goal is a safe, relaxed experience and a beautiful gallery you’ll treasure.

1) Before your session: booking and timing

If you’re planning newborn photos with Casey, the best time to book is ideally during your second trimester (or as soon as you know you want to do it). It is not uncommon for me to book 3–4 months in advance, and last-minute spots can be rare.

When is the best age for newborn photos?

Most classic sleepy, curled newborn images are captured when baby is 5–14 days old. That’s when they’re usually sleepier and more naturally settled into those womb-like poses.

Don’t stress if your baby arrives early, late, or things feel unpredictable. Once you’re booked and baby arrives, we’ll adjust your session date accordingly.

2) What to bring (and what you don’t need to bring)

You don’t need to overpack. My studio is set up to make this easy.

Bring:

  • Extra milk/formula if you use it
  • Dummies (even if you don’t normally use one, they can help for quick settling)
  • A spare change of clothes for you (vomit happens!)
  • Snacks and water for you and toddlers
  • OPTIONAL - Anything sentimental or precious to include - teddies, favourite outfits, blankets, and more!

You can leave at home:

  • Props, wraps, and blankets (I have a full styling collection) - UNLESS there is something special you would like included.
  • Toys/entertainment for toddlers - We have a few toys and a TV in studio to help your little one get through, however feel free to bring anything extra along if you wish!
  • Stress about baby “behaving” (newborns and toddlers do newborn and toddler things)

3) What to wear (for parents and siblings)

If you’re including family images, keep it simple and timeless.

Best colours for newborn family photos

  • Soft neutrals (cream, beige, oatmeal)
  • Earthy tones (warm browns, rust, olive)
  • Muted pastels; pinks, blues, greens are always stunning!
  • Plain black/white/grey

What to avoid

  • Large logos
  • Busy patterns
  • Neon colours

If you’re unsure, I’m happy to help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully and feel like you.

4) What happens when you arrive at the studio

When you arrive, we’ll ease in gently. You’ll have time to settle, feed, and get comfortable.

My studio is designed to be a comfortable temperature and calm, with multiple backdrop options and everything we need on hand.

5) Safety first: how newborn posing is done

Newborn photography should always be done with safety as the top priority.

I’m always upskilling in the latest newborn safety and safe posing, and I work slowly and carefully, always watching:

  • Baby’s comfort and breathing
  • Temperature and circulation
  • Natural limits of movement

If baby doesn’t like a pose, we NEVER force it. There are always beautiful alternatives!

6) The flow of your session (step-by-step)

EVERY session is different. Not every family, baby and day is the same, so each session will always look and feel a little different. I always talk to the family, and gauge how baby, and siblings and parents are feeling to determine the flow. And you know what? Half the time a spanner is thrown in and the idea in my head is swapped around anyway!

Even though every baby is different, but most sessions follow a gentle rhythm, such as this:

Step 1: settle and soothe

Start with baby wrapped and snug. This helps most newborns feel secure and sleepy.

Step 2: styled sets and simple details

From there, we move through a few styled setups using wraps, textures, and props. I also capture some tiny details you’ll forget faster than you think such as:

  • Eyelashes
  • Fingers and toes
  • Little lips
  • Hair swirls

Step 3: family and sibling images

If you’re including siblings, I usually photograph them earlier in the session so they can relax afterwards. However, toddlers will be toddlers! We always just go with their flow!

Family images are guided and gentle. You don’t need to know how to pose. I’ll direct you in a way that feels natural and flattering.

7) How long does a newborn session take?

Newborn sessions can typically take 2 hours, possibly a little longer with family images, because we build in time for feeding and settling.

If you’re searching for a newborn photographer on the Mid North Coast, this is one of the biggest differences between a true newborn session and a quick mini session. Newborns need time, and that time is part of the experience.

8) After the session: editing, gallery delivery, and turnaround

After your session, I carefully select and professionally edit your images.

My promised turnaround time is two weeks, but I often deliver much sooner.

You’ll receive a private online gallery where you can view and download your images.

9) Tips to help your session go smoothly

Here are a few simple things that can make a big difference:

  • We ALWAYS book the first session of the day - around 9am. When scheduling, think which day of the week this would suit this best.
  • Feed baby as you arrive at the studio
  • Dress baby in something easy to remove
  • Try not to over-schedule your day. Keep it slow.
