Choosing the Perfect Location for Your Family Photography Session in Macleay Valley & Kempsey
When it comes to family photography, the location you choose is so much more than just a backdrop—it becomes part of your story. In our beautiful Macleay Valley, we’re lucky to be surrounded by an incredible variety of landscapes, from windswept beaches at South West Rocks and Crescent Head to tranquil riversides, lush bushland, and even the comfort of your own backyard. As a family photographer who has explored countless hidden gems across this area, I’ve learned that the right location can transform your session into something truly special.
Every family is unique, and the place you pick for your photos should reflect your personality and the things you love. Maybe you’re drawn to the golden sands and rolling waves of our world famous beaches, where your kids race each other along the shoreline, or perhaps you feel most at home in the dappled light of bush tracks winding through the quieter parts of the Valley. Some families cherish the coziness of their own home, surrounded by everyday memories. Over the years, I’ve noticed that families who choose locations that hold personal meaning to them often connect more deeply with their images. There’s a certain magic that happens when you’re in a place that feels like “yours”—the laughter is more genuine, the hugs come a little easier, and the photos become lifelong treasures.
Of course, if you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry—I have a few secret spots up my sleeve! Years of photographing families in this region means I know where we can make magic, whether you’re after dramatic coastal views, soft grassy paddocks, or a quiet riverside nook. I’m always happy to suggest locations that will suit your family’s style and needs. But I genuinely encourage you to think about places that matter to you. Even if it’s somewhere simple, like the park where you walk your dog every weekend or the backyard where your children play, those personal touches add so much meaning to your photos.

Comfort and convenience are also essential when planning your session. The best family photos happen when everyone feels relaxed and at ease—especially little ones and grandparents. Around the Macleay Valley, there are plenty of locations with easy parking, nearby amenities, and short walks from the car to the perfect spot. Beaches like South West Rocks and Crescent Head often have public facilities, while some bushland or riverside areas are a little more off the beaten path but still accessible. If you have young children, prams, or family members who might find long walks tricky, let’s choose a spot that keeps things simple and enjoyable for everyone. The more comfortable you are, the more natural and joyful your images will be.
Another key element to consider is light. The time of day you schedule your session can completely transform the look and feel of your photos. We’re blessed with beautiful, soft light during the “golden hour”—that magical window just after sunrise or before sunset. Beaches truly come alive at these times, with the sky glowing and the water shimmering in a way that can’t be replicated at any other hour. Bushland and open fields also benefit from this gentle light, creating warmth and depth in your images. As your photographer, I’ll always advise on the best timing for your chosen location to ensure you get the most flattering and dreamy results.
Variety is another wonderful benefit of shooting in this region. Many locations offer a mix of backdrops, from sandy dunes and rocky outcrops on the coast to grassy meadows and shady trees inland. This means we can capture a diverse gallery of images without having to travel far. Natural textures like driftwood, wild grasses, and weathered fences add character and interest, and if you’re up for a little adventure, we can explore a few different “looks” in one session. I love introducing families to some of my favourite secret locations, but I’m equally excited when you bring your own ideas! Some of my most memorable sessions have happened in places I’d never visited before—a family’s special fishing spot, a beloved picnic area, or even a hidden corner of their property.

There are also practicalities to consider, like permissions, privacy, and preparation. Some public spaces, especially popular beaches or nature reserves, might require permits or have certain restrictions, particularly during busy times of year. I’ll handle all the logistics and make sure everything is sorted before your session. If privacy is important to you—maybe you’d rather avoid the crowds, or you just want a more intimate experience—I can recommend quieter spots where you can relax and be yourselves. Before your session, I’ll also provide a detailed prep guide with tips on what to bring (snacks, water, spare clothes for the kids) and advice on what to wear for timeless, coordinated images that let your family’s personality shine.
Ultimately, the best location for your family photography session is the one that feels right for you. What matters most is that your photos reflect your story.
