When you think about family photography, what comes to mind first? For many, it’s images of mothers cuddling newborns, siblings giggling together, or little ones wrapped in soft blankets. And while those moments are undeniably beautiful and central to what I do, there’s another dynamic that never fails to tug at my heartstrings: dads in the frame with their kids.
If you’re a dad reading this—or if you’re a mum hoping to convince your partner to join in—I want to share why these moments matter so much to me personally, why I believe they’re worth capturing, and how I do everything I can to make the experience as relaxed and enjoyable as possible for everyone (especially the dads who might be a little camera-shy).
The Honest Truth: Most Dads Don’t Love the Idea of Family Photos
Let’s just put it out there: for most dads, the idea of a professional photo session doesn’t exactly top the list of fun weekend activities. I see it all the time. Dads arrive at the studio or on location with a mix of good-natured patience and mild apprehension. Sometimes there’s a nervous joke, a sheepish grin, or a quiet hope that this will all be over soon. In many cases, the promise of an ice-cold beer at the end of a session lingers on the lips of mum.
And you know what? I completely understand. Being in front of the camera isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. For many men, it feels unnatural to pose, to smile on cue, or to even know what to do with their hands. Add in the pressure of wrangling little ones, keeping everyone happy, and trying not to blink at the wrong moment, and it can feel like a lot.
But here’s the thing: those feelings are completely normal, and they’re nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, they’re exactly why I’ve shaped my entire approach around making dads (and everyone, really) feel comfortable, supported, and genuinely seen.
Why Dads Matter So Much in Family Photos
Before I dive into how I help dads relax and enjoy the process, I want to talk about why it’s so important for fathers to be in the frame in the first place.
1. Dads Are Part of the Story
Family photos aren’t just about capturing what your family looks like—they’re about capturing who you are together. Dads play a huge role in shaping the energy, love, and memories of a family. Whether you’re the fun parent, the gentle encourager, the steady presence, or all of the above, your kids will treasure seeing you by their side as they grow.
2. Kids Notice (And Remember) Dad’s Presence
When I look back at my own childhood photos, some of the most precious ones are those that include my dad. There’s something powerful about seeing the way he looked at me, the way he held my hand, or the way he made me laugh. Those images aren’t just for parents—they’re for children, too. They become a visual record of just how loved they were by both mum and dad.
3. The Unique Energy Dads Bring
Every parent has their own style, and dads often bring a playful, protective, and sometimes downright goofy energy to sessions. I love capturing the way a dad’s eyes light up when his child does something silly, or the way he scoops up his kids for a big bear hug. These moments are real, unscripted, and full of life.
4. You Deserve to Be Remembered, Too
Let’s be honest—so often, it’s mums who are behind the camera, capturing dad and the kids during birthdays, milestones, and all those everyday adventures. But mums deserve to be in those memories too, right alongside dads. Years from now, your children will treasure looking back at photos where both of you are there together, sharing those moments not just with them, but with each other as well.
My Personal Connection: Watching My Husband With Our Kids
This isn’t just something I believe as a photographer—it’s something I feel deeply as a mum and a wife. Some of my most cherished memories are the everyday moments I witness between my husband and our children. It’s in the way he kisses them good night at bedtime, the way he makes them laugh, or the way he gently soothes them when they’re upset.
There’s a tenderness and strength in those interactions that I never want to forget. And as much as I love being in the photos myself, I also want my kids to have a record of the love, patience, and joy their dad brought into their lives. That’s why I’m so passionate about making sure other families have these memories, too. Some of my favourite photos I've ever taken are those of Dads gently holding and cherishing their children. You feel such a strength and bond in these moments, even from the outside looking in.
The Typical Dad Experience: From Reluctant to Relaxed
So, what does it actually look like when a dad comes to a session with me? Here’s a little behind-the-scenes peek at how I help even the most hesitant dads feel comfortable—and dare I say, even enjoy—the experience.
1. Setting the Tone: It’s Okay to Be Nervous
First things first: I always acknowledge that it’s normal to feel a bit awkward at the start. There’s no expectation for anyone (dad, mum, or kids) to be professional models. My sessions are about capturing real connections, not perfect poses.
I let everyone know that it’s okay to be themselves, to take a moment to settle in, and to trust that I’ll guide them through the process. This simple reassurance often goes a long way in helping dads let their guard down.
2. Creating a Supportive, Pressure-Free Environment
My studio is designed to be welcoming and relaxed. Whether we’re shooting indoors or outside, I keep things light and flexible. There’s no rush, no pressure to “perform,” and plenty of time for breaks, snacks, or just letting the kids run around for a bit.
For dads, this means you can be present with your family without worrying about getting everything “right.” I’ll offer gentle direction when needed, but I’m just as happy to step back and capture candid moments as they unfold naturally.
3. Encouraging Natural Interaction
Instead of stiff poses or forced smiles, I encourage families to interact with each other as they normally would. For dads, this might mean playing a quick game of chase with the kids, tossing a toddler in the air, or sharing a quiet moment of cuddling a newborn.
I often find that the best photos happen in the in-between moments—the spontaneous laughter, the comforting touch, the way a dad’s eyes crinkle when he sees his child’s grin. These are the images that tell your family’s unique story.
4. Gentle Guidance, Never Force
If a dad feels unsure about what to do, I’m there to provide gentle guidance. Simple prompts like “hold your little one close,” “give your partner a quick squeeze,” or “look at each other and laugh about something silly” can help ease the tension and create genuine smiles.
But I never force anyone into poses or situations that feel uncomfortable. My goal is always to respect each person’s comfort level and to make the experience enjoyable for everyone.
5. Celebrating the Results
After the session, I love sharing previews with families and seeing the reactions—especially from dads who might have been skeptical at first. More often than not, they’re amazed at how natural and joyful the photos look, and they’re grateful for the chance to be part of these lasting memories.
Common Concerns Dads Have
Over the years, I’ve heard just about every concern a dad might have about family photos. Here are a few of the most common, along with my approach to putting those worries to rest:
“I Don’t Know How to Pose”
You don’t have to! My sessions are all about capturing natural moments. I’ll guide you with simple prompts and let you interact with your family in ways that feel comfortable.
“I Always Look Awkward in Photos”
Most people feel this way at first, but I promise, you’ll be surprised at how relaxed and happy you look when you’re simply being yourself with your loved ones. I focus on capturing genuine connection, not forced smiles.
“I Don’t Like Being the Centre of Attention”
You’re not alone in this. Many dads prefer to blend into the background, and that’s perfectly fine. I’ll never put you on the spot or make you do anything that feels unnatural. Your presence and participation are what matter most.
“I’m Just Here for the Kids (Or My Partner)”
That’s wonderful! Your willingness to show up for your family is exactly what makes these images so meaningful. Even if you’re just there to support your loved ones, your involvement adds a layer of authenticity and love to every photo!
Real Stories: Dads Who Made the Leap
Some of my favourite sessions have been those where dads started out hesitant but ended up fully embracing the experience. I’ve seen dads go from quietly standing on the sidelines to laughing, playing, and even suggesting ideas for photos by the end of the session.
One dad, in particular, arrived at a newborn session looking like he’d rather be anywhere else. By the time we finished, he was cradling his baby with the softest smile, sharing stories about his own childhood, and even asking if we could do a few extra shots with his toddler. The resulting images were some of the most heartfelt I’ve ever captured, and his wife later told me how much it meant to her to have those memories preserved.
I often hear from mums after their sessions, sharing how much it meant to have their partner involved. But what really stands out are the messages I get from dads themselves. Some are surprised at how much they enjoyed the experience; others are grateful for the chance to be part of their family’s story in a new way. Elwyn (pictured here) was completely shocked that their 90 minute had passed so quickly, simply because of how relaxed and fun it was. It's completely normal to be wary of a session; you aren't the only one! But I promise that I will always go the extra mile to make sure it is as painless as possible for you!
Tips for Dads: How to Make the Most of Your Family Photo Session
If you’re a dad reading this and feeling nervous about an upcoming session, here are a few tips to help you relax and enjoy the experience:
- Trust the Process: You don’t need to be a model or know how to pose. Just be yourself and let your love for your family shine through.
- Interact Naturally: Play with your kids, talk to your partner, and let your personality come through. The best photos happen when you forget the camera is even there.
- Communicate Your Concerns: If there’s something you’re worried about, let me know! I’m here to make the experience comfortable for everyone. If you are feeling awkward, let me know. It is my job to make sure you look your best, not yours! Call me out on it! I need to know if I'm not helping you the best I can!
- Remember Why You’re Here: These photos aren’t just for you—they’re for your family, now and in the future. Your presence matters more than you realise.
- Have Fun: Seriously—relax, laugh, and enjoy the time with your loved ones. The more fun you have, the better the photos will be.
A Note to Mums: How to Encourage Your Partner
If you’re a mum hoping to get your partner more involved in family photos, here are a few gentle suggestions:
- Share Why It Matters: Let him know how much these memories mean to you and your kids.
- Keep Expectations Low: Remind him that it’s not about perfection—it’s about being together.
- Pick Comfortable Outfits: Make sure everyone feels good in what they’re wearing (no itchy collars or tight shirts!).
- Let Him Be Himself: Encourage natural interaction, not forced poses.
- Celebrate His Effort: A little appreciation goes a long way!
Looking Ahead: Why I’ll Always Champion Dads in the Frame
As a photographer, as a mum, and as someone who knows how quickly these years fly by, I’ll always encourage dads to step into the frame. These images aren’t just about looking good—they’re about preserving the love, connection, and joy that make your family unique.
To all the dads who have trusted me to capture their stories: thank you. Thank you for showing up, for loving your kids, and for allowing yourselves to be seen—not just by the camera, but by the people who matter most.
And to all the families out there—whether you’re booking your first session or your fifth—know that my greatest goal is to make you feel comfortable, supported, and truly seen. Every family is different, and every story is worth telling.
